Students who wish to have the practical experience of writing an extended piece of original scholarly work may complete the final three semester hours of their program by writing a thesis. Work for the thesis will include reading and research in Chinese texts. The thesis advisor and two other faculty members constitute the thesis committee. Following completion of the thesis, an oral defense is held in which the committee and the student discuss the work. The approval of the committee is required for the awarding of the MA degree with thesis.

Students who do not select the thesis option fulfill the degree requirements by accumulating 30 s.h. in coursework. These students submit a copy of a seminar paper, including a bibliography, to members of their advisory committee, and the committee meets with the students to discuss the work.
